Baie-Saint-Paul-based modern artist Josiane Lanthier has a superpower: haptic perception and synaesthesia, her senses are entangled and intersected at the heart of her neurological connections, giving way to an art that is sometimes tactile, sometimes tinged with a vibrant pastel/fluorescent palette!

Lanthier

The talented artist wishes synesthesia on everyone! Why not? Taste the music, smell the colours... make the world as funky and colourful as Josiane Lanthier’s bewitching landscapes!

A touch of poetry, the play of light, unexpected colours, experiencing the primal joy of having the paint gush out of its tube, mixing it, layering it onto the canvas... these are the kinds of tactile and sensory games that Josiane plays in her studio. Big or small, projected or textured, Josiane Lanthier’s work is tinged with her lively personality. An enthusiasm shared by the art world, where she has made a name for herself thanks to her forests of purple birch, silhouettes of neon green spruces, and skies sewn with sequins... Her work is represented by the Kamouraska gallery, as well as by Montreal’s Galerie Simon Blais, alongside the inspiring artist (and centenarian!) Françoise Sullivan. In 2023, she was also part of the cohort of the 41st Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.

These days, Josiane is really into creating larger pieces—5 or 7 feet tall. Exhibited at L’oeil de Poisson at the Méduse art centre in Québec City, her giant canvases span from floor to ceiling in her studio, where she falls into a dance of sorts, squatting here, stretching there; at this level, her art becomes an endurance sport, one she sometimes practices for up to 12 hours at a time... squeegee in hand, broom or brush, she works her surface, patiently adding and juxtaposing fine organic lines, patterns of branches, snow…  a game of contrasts she enjoys just as much as one enjoys a dish that strikes the perfect balance between crunch and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. A food parallel she is currently exploring, reflecting on the links between organic farming and the artistic approach. «Slow food,» «Slow art,» «Slow everything.» Enthusiastic about the smallest things, she finds wonder and amazement in everyday moments: the reflection of a taillight on snow, or a small mound behind the grocery store.

Always observing nature through an artistic lens, searching for inspiration in the wild, her love for the mythical Group of Seven is evident, as is her adventurous side. Perched backwards on a   «Ski doo,» planting her easel in the snow, she’s the epitome of a modern-day Charlevoix landscape painter. She hunts, gathers and likes to call herself a «woman of the woods,» but above all, she considers herself lucky in the face of all the beauty Charlevoix has to offer, this invigorating and lively place she calls home!

Authentic, proud, personified, modern and feminist, Josiane carries her art with her, wears it like a badge of honour as she poses for our photographer.
