Multiple Personalities
Be an interstellar princess, or ground yourself in this place?
Identify with everyday life, or through that of a mythological creature?
Get lost in a sea of faces, or take the stage as a queer wrestler?
Take part in the patchwork of human experience, or fade into a derivative past?
Be intrigued by the unknown, or freeze time?
A body that goes with the flow, or that grows old?
The artists taking part in Baie-Saint-Paul’s 41st Symposium d’art contemporain [Contemporary Art Symposium] aim their subjective gaze at questions of identity and community.

Who am I?
Who are we?
August 2023.
The hallways of the MACBSP’s Pavillon Jacques Saint-Gelais Tremblay building are lined with these questions.
Sequences of words that are potential triggers for raging identity crises.
A sense of distress builds: Who am I? Truly. Where do I fit, in the world? In the crowd? Centuries of human philosophy jostle for space in our disoriented minds…
Between self and community, there is, nevertheless, a constant: We’re all here, united by this ultimate quest for meaning!
Now, in classrooms-turned-studios, this group of artists, too, looks to discover avenues, make hypotheses, ask the deeper questions… all of which brings to life to an ecosystem in which every studio, every room, becomes an interconnected microcosm, nurtured by the flow of visitors. Conversations feed into creativity. Artworks multiply.
Herein lies the beauty of the Baie-Saint-Paul Contemporary Art Symposium!
