For more than 120 years, it has gazed down upon the rocky cape and the deep waters below. For more than a century, it has witnessed the pure joy of its visitors; the vacationers and tourists who turned our landscape into a playground. Firmly grounded between past and future, between salty sea and vast sky, the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu sits proudly upon its hill, filled wall-to-wall with rich history.

More than 120 years of hospitality

The rolling green mountains whose peaks offer a view of the bay below give us glimpses at the smooth clay dunes at low tide. The scattered mist cools your skin on those dog days of summer, and the salty sea air envelopes you with its kelp perfume. This summer dream is what has earned La Malbaie its reputation for over a century now, and that draws in vacationers each year from the big American cities, who have come to find the nature and cooler climate of our region. Many large families took summer homes in the shady lanes of Chemin des Falaises, while others chose to summer at the famous Manoir Richelieu, first erected in wood (1899) and later rebuilt in stone as we now know it, following a devastating fire in 1928.

Vacationers would flock to the Manoir in droves each Thursday, disembarking from the famous “White Boats” of Canadian Steamship Lines, docking at the pier below the rocky promontory where the hotel sits. Entire families (with their entourage and luggage in tow) would unload and climb the hill by horse-drawn carriage, and settle in at times for a matter of weeks. The destination had everything to charm a tourist: hunting, fishing, golfing, waterfront, and activities for every kind of tourist. Then, a century ago in 1909, La Malbaie was connected with the railway, a second access to the region which, just like the fleuve, continued to attract the crowds from big cities, looking to recharge with the pure air of La Malbaie.

Times changed. The Manoir was hooked up to power. Roads were built and the automobile took over the roads. The White Boats are no more, yet La Malbaie, the Pointe-au-Pic sector and its famous Manoir continue to receive tourists by the thousands each and every summer. Tourists now favour the spa, the casino and the pool over lawn bowling. They visit as a couple, as a family or just for the weekend. But we continue to pay tribute to the visitors of the past when enjoying an “18 hole” on the Manoir’s spectacular golf course. The salty fleuve air, just like certain traditions, remains unchanged. For about 20 years now, in the proud hands of the Fairmont chain, Le Manoir Richelieu proudly honours its timeless tradition of generous and attentive service. Fairmont preserves the past with its savoir-faire and by perpetually looking forward. The establishment is modern in its values and is actively involved in the community, thinks locally and makes eco-responsible choices.

Its enviable history, location and reputation are what earned the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu the honour of hosting the G7 Summit in 2018. The largest annual political event has now been added to the Manoir’s history.
