In the beginning, there were mountains. Entire chains emerging from the depths, where continents met. Plate techtonics, at a time when the whole world had yet to become what it is today. The earth’s fire welling up fiercely at the point of contact…
Then: ice ages, freezes and thaws, driving the motion of entire glaciers. Giants… No, what am I saying? Monsters, slipping down to our piece of the world, as patches of ice on a car window in the sun do. The glacier’s weight chipping away at the ground like a plow does in spring, carving spectacular canyons, cliffs, and fertile valleys on a sublimely epic, and terrifying stage.
When, from out of nowhere, a meteorite tears through the sky with thunderous noise before it impacts Charlevoix’s peaceful earth so hard that it leaves not only a yawning crater where it comes to rest, but a giant splattering of mountains. The Mont des Éboulements sits like an exclamation point on the landscape!
Already, Charlevoix’s magnetism seemed to come into play: a whole island breaks away from the opposite shore and quietly comes to rest offshore, on the riverbed.

Where earth and space meet, where worlds collide in the cold, one might be tempted to believe in legends; after all, is it not often said that the whole world rests on the back of a turtle? But this isn’t just made-up stories, not even "chouennes" [tall tales], as we say around here; this is the true story of the land in this area.
